Every small action makes a difference. Ultimately, it is a shared responsibility that each of us has to undertake to protect our planet and make it as sustainable as we can for our future generations to come.
Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit. The Earth and its ecosystems are our home, in order to achieve a just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs of present and future generations, it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. This day also recognises a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity. International Mother Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.
We, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) believe that the International Mother Earth Day is a chance to reaffirm our collective responsibility to promote harmony with nature at a time when our planet is under threat from climate change, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources and other man-made problems. We need to undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility or encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. The International Earth Day serves as yet another opportunity to prompt mankind to step up to these responsibilities and reflect on environmental protection and the development of renewable energy.
Young people are all accountable to take up the responsibility by increasing efforts, raising awareness and taking initiative. It's time for youth to invest in efficiency and renewable energy and begin to solve the climate crisis. Together, let’s redefine what progress looks like; especially for the youth, it is your turn to lead the societies in saving the Mother Earth!
