International Youth Day

Young men are fitter to invent than to judge; fitter for execution than for counsel; and fitter for new projects than for settled business.  /Francis Bacon/

Young people make up one-sixth of whole human population while their curiosity and passion has no boundaries. Youth with their bursting energy and enthusiasm are the key to the world's future development.

The United Nations (UN) has always aimed to encourage young people to be actively involved in positive change within the society and help to motivate their environment for the best. In order to acknowledge and realize the importance and great role that young people play, UN has selected 12th August as the International Youth Day (IYD) to annually commemorate the youth. Through this initiative, UN intends to raise awareness regarding youth-related issues and recognize the efforts of youth from all around the world in enhancing global society. The idea emerged by young people in Vienna, Austria at the first session of UN's World Youth Forum in 1991 and was first put into practice in 2000.

It always seems impossible until it's done. Nelson Mandela.

Every story needs a hero. A representation of everything that should be right for this world, everything we should aspire to. Today's hero is Nelson Mandela. A decent man, a man that spent the best years of his life, 27 years in jail, to fight for what he believed to be right and stood strong not only for himself, but also for the rights of others.

Never has there been a greater triumph of the human spirit in recent history, so that the United Nations decided to annually dedicate 18th of July, Mr. Mandela's birthday, to commemorate his achievements of life as the Nelson Mandela International Day.

Nelson Mandela is the embodiment of values such as freedom, equality, respect and values that we, the youth need to embrace, as we aspire to a brighter future, which we hope to be engulfed by world peace and harmony. Nelson Mandela International Day is a global call for people to recognize their ability in order to have a positive effect on others around them, by being persistent, determined and dedicated to their core values and principals.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2013

on .

To deliberately inflict pain on another human being is the most animalistic human trait by far. Everyone has the right to be mentally and physically freed from any form of torture. It is time the world stood together to put this ill treatment to a total halt.

It is disheartening that this sinister act is still happening, and could be going on in our backyards without even knowing. The United Nations has condemned the act of torture as one of the vilest and irresponsible actions committed by human beings to each other. To further express their support towards the victims of torture, they have specially chosen 26th June annually as International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. This year's theme is rehabilitation, which is selected to acknowledge its pivotal function to reintegrate the victims back to societies.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2013

on .

There has been considerable concern about the perceived number of young people around the world who are using illicit psychoactive substances. The widespread concern about the use and abuse of illicit drugs is reflected by its high status on health, educational and political agendas in many countries.

In 2010 alone, around 210 million people, youth inclusive, were predicted to take illicit substances at least once, causing drug-trafficking to be one of the largest criminal offence that brings in the most significant social impact to the communities. If strategies to reduce the use of drugs and associated harms amongst the younger population are to be developed, particularly within the health education arena, it is vital that we improve our understanding of the roles that both licit and illicit substances play in the lives of young people.

World Music Day 2013

on .

Music is the universal language of mankind. It is an effective means of communication within and across cultures; a powerful form of expression and communication; and a source of inspiration for some of us. It serves as a remedy, soother of depression, for many of us. Whatever the value that it holds for every individual. Music is certainly a treasure of art whose civilization generates.

The significance of music to all people is indeed unquestionable. Imagine living without music; a colorless, tasteless and dull life close to emptiness. Plato once expressed the importance of music by quoting, "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything."
