Positions: Co-Chairs of the United Nations Civil Society Conference, 2024


The Department of Global Communications, in close coordination with the civil society community represented through the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN), the Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC), the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO), and the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) Coordination Mechanism, is seeking nominations for two positions to serve as Co-Chairs of the United Nations Civil Society Conference, which is scheduled to be held on 9 and 10 May 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. The incumbents will also co-chair the Conference Planning Committee with the United Nations Department of Global Communications. 


The Conference is expected to focus on issues related to the upcoming Summit of the Future (New York, September 2024) to support the inclusion of civil society voices in the action-oriented outcome document called the Pact for the Future. The Department of Global Communications, in close coordination with the civil society community represented through the four main aforementioned groups, will appoint two Co-Chairs for the Conference, aiming at selecting one Co-Chair from the Global South and one Co-Chari from the Global North. Overview


Candidates may be nominated by representatives of any civil society organization associated with the Department of Global Communications and/or in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).


Major Functions and Responsibilities


  • Work in close collaboration with the United Nations Department of Global Communications and civil society organizations.

  • Co-chair the Conference Planning Committee together with the Department of Global Communications for the purpose of managing all the preparations for the Conference, including the agenda, background documentation, and the organization of all sessions.\

  • Coordinate the work of the subcommittees of the Conference Planning Committee.

  • Understand the issues the Conference will address.

  • Help raise awareness among civil society organizations, academic institutions, private sector entities, and foundations regarding the issues to be addressed at the Conference.

  • Conduct and organize discussions on the Conference’s major themes.

  • Coordinate the recommendations emanating from the discussions at the Conference and lead the efforts to disseminate the 2024 UNCSC outcome document, with the goal of inviting Member States to consider the input and recommendations as they work on the Pact for the Future.

  • Have good organizing, verbal, interpersonal and diplomatic skills and be able to conduct discussions and negotiate positions.


Volunteer Commitment


Please note that the position would be purely on a voluntary basis. There is no salary for the work to be undertaken. The United Nations will cover the costs of travel, lodging, and Daily Subsistence Allowance for the Conference.

Required Qualifications/ Experiences

  • Familiar with issues and priorities addressed by the United Nations, particularly activities related to the Sustainable Development Goals, the Summit of the Future and the role of civil society.

  • Prior experience in managing a large-scale international event, managing committee and sub-committee deliverables.

  • Knowledgeable in UN processes, rules, and procedures, particularly those related to civil society engagement and the corresponding mechanisms.

  • Understanding and leading international multi-stakeholder consultative processes and activating international networks.

Positions: Sub-Committee Nominations of the United Nations Civil Society Conference, 2024


As you may be aware, we are in the process of planning a visionary Conference to discuss the role of civil society in the upcoming "2024 Summit of the Future" agenda. The Conference will occur on May 9-10 in Nairobi, Kenya.
