International Day of Peace

September 21, 2022

The International Day of Peace is observed annually on 21 September, and it is an opportunity to remind ourselves in creating a world where people are treated equally regardless of their race and socio-economic status. This Day is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of nonviolence and ceasefire. The United Nations’ General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

This day should be celebrated by standing up against acts of hate online and offline, and by spreading compassion, kindness, and hope. As we heal from this pandemic and challenging times, we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about a better recovery, and having our world transform into one that is more equal, just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. A/RES/53/243 B. Hence, the theme for this year’s International Day of Peace is ‘End racism, Build peace’. We all have a role to play in fostering peace. Tackling racism is a crucial way to contribute to this effort. To end racism, we should start by making peace with one another and with nature.

We, at World Assembly of Youth (WAY), pledge to promote peace and solidarity especially amongst the youth. Young people are stepping up to the challenge, they are taking action on promoting peace in their homes and communities. Do join us in celebrating this day by spreading compassion, kindness, and hope in the face of the pandemic. We call upon young people to stand together against racism, discrimination, or hatred.

We also call upon them to embrace and reflect on the value of peace in their hearts and minds, and gently nurture it through the actions so it may blossom as a tradition in our societies. Every person has the right to live peacefully, and the achievement of peace is a shared responsibly. In respect with that, WAY supports and encourages young people to showcase the projects that promote peace.

Join us as we end racism and shape peace together.
