International HPV Awarness Day Campaign 2021

Today marks the 4th annual International HPV Awareness Day, a day that is used to spread knowledge and prevention around the globe. The World Assembly of Youth (WAY) is joining forces worldwide to commemorate this Day and to spark conversation and promote a worldwide exchange of ideas, knowledge, and research materials about human papilloma viruses (HPV) and their associated diseases.

There are more than 200 different HPV types, 80 percent of people will have HPV at some point in their lifetime and while for many it will cause no harm. Whereas, some types of HPVs are known to cause certain type of cancers such as: cervical, anal, and/or pharyngeal cancer. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women and sadly an estimated 270,000 women die of cervical cancer every year.

The International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS) is excited to proclaim March 4th as “International HPV Awareness Day”. This day aims to promote awareness around HPV infection, how it spreads, and how HPV infection and the diseases that it causes can be prevented. The theme for this year’s HPV Awareness Day is “HPV: A Virus We All Can Beat” and it aims to raise awareness about the availability of prevention tools, promote education about HPV, and encourage governments and individuals across the world to take action against HPV to save hundreds of thousands of women and men that can benefit from the HPV vaccine and/or screening for the early detection of cancer and treatment.

As part of this campaign, WAY headquarters is proud to be part of the International HPV Awareness Day, we believe in raising awareness on this health challenges faced by young people around the world. We also aim to promote education and encourage youth across the world to establish a basis for communities, schools, and universities, on what can be done to improve spreading the news and to take action. HPV related cancers can be prevented and this knowledge needs to be shared to everyone. Everybody needs to be informed and, if adequate, to enrol in a preventive activity that reduces the risk to develop a cancer associated with HPV.
